Fun! Great news.
In the course of activating this feature, I noticed, that the install_cfg
target is missing from install in server/Makefile. Probably intentionally left
out, but worth a note nevertheless... Also installing gkrellmd.conf to
/usr/etc is a bit unusual, isn't it?
Here's, what I did right now:

Needless to say, it works like a charm: Hooray!
Silly me to not speak up earlier. Submit to openSUSE:Factory is on the way.

Hehe, yes, NFS and especially NFS homes are great source of fun and so old
school at the same time.. I use both of course ;-) I used to run full featured
diskless workstations based on aufs, but that use case declined unfortunately.
